Jim Busby Racing

Richard Munz debuts his newly restored Chuck Porter Truck along side the formerly restored Platypus Roadster.  Both cars are incredible - this is a site that Jim Busby remembers as  a 13 year old kid walking into the LA AutoRama.

Using his memory, pictures, and memories, they Busby Team restored these two beauties back to the way Chuck Porter would have wanted them…

The Bean Bandits

Thinking of Bonneville today… It would be nice to be on the salt early this morning…  One of my favorite groups there was a San Diego team (Home of your Blogger Extraordinaire) The Bean Bandits… They have some really great iron out on the track and they seem to be doing things right.

Around the Shop Friday

It is with great excitement that we present the Kurtis 500 in its new paint job.

Richard Munz came Wednesday, and saw the newly finished cars.  He gave them two thumbs up.

Now, he is headed up to the LA Roadster show in the Roadster and then he is driving it all the way to Canada!

“Mad Men and Hot Rods”

Well, I don’t think Jim has been watching the show Mad Men, but I sure have… I was particularly stoked when the main character is on a trip to California and he stumbles across some hot rods in Pasadena.

It brought up an interesting perspective to hot rods that really defines why they are so cool.  When some guys were cooking them up in their garages there truly was nothing remotely like them.

We have talked about about all the ‘32’s that are in the shop before, but we took them out and got some really cool shots of them last week, so I wanted to go ahead and talk about them again…

3 Rat Rods

1 Delivery Sedan (I could be wrong about it being a sedan, the black one above…)

1 Awesome silver High boy (this means the fenders are off), shown above…

1 Chopped Red Hot Rod (chopped means they cut the body to make it look a certain way, there is a whole art to this.)

The 3 Window (We just talked about it’s transformation from Metal to Black paint)

The Bonneville Roadster (We take this out to the Bonneville Salt Flats, and break speed records, my first trip will be in August, can’t wait!!)

How did I do? I am feeling pretty good, hopefully I got all that right without even having to ask Jim…

“Speedway, again”

Last week, when we talked about Speedway and how it made its way into Jim Busby’s Career…  I did a lot of research on all the people he was talking about, in particular Bobby Schwartz…

  Bobby Schwartz is his son-in-law and father to Jim’s grandchild Bobby.  I also had no idea what Speedway is all about.  When I saw this video, I got it.

Schwartz is the main character in the film.

He won two World Pairs Championships while racing for Jim… One with Bruce Penhall and One with Dennis Sigalos… the one with Sigalos is in the Guiness Book because they did on a perfect score it has never been done before or since… All with my Jim’s support and sponsorship.

“Going back to Before Willow Springs”

I should have gotten this out Thursday, but there was so much going on at the shop to get the 3 Window ready, that I plumb got distracted… The result is a slightly backwards reminisence.

This car did not just spring up out of the ground in all its perfect glory, it took some serious time by the A Team, to get it together.  Some incredibly amazing prep work went into this car…

The car started out as bare steel and #3, and came back black and #2… Dale Earnhardt drives the black #3 car, we couldn’t do that!

Nice work… Now, get to work on the Bonneville Roadster!  Can’t wait!  Stay tuned…

“Test Day At Willow Springs”

Boy, it was a beautiful day out at Willow Springs.  Normally it gets really windy, not yesterday… Couldn’t have asked for a better race day.

The 3 Window debuted in its new all Black paint.  It took your breath away everytime you looked away for a second and then looked back at it.  Then, performed perfectly.  All the changes solved lots of former problems.  Click here to see the 3 Window Before.

Rick Knoop’s Jaguar ran great, too.  He is getting ready to take it to Watkins Glenn in New York.

We had some really great people come watch;

Bobby and Melinda Walden (about to burst at 7 months pregnant!)

 Jake Jacobs pulled up in is awesome ‘34 that he drove all the way from Lake Arrowhead.

Fred Knoop came down from Carmel to watch Rick drive… Cydette, Rick’s girlfriend, was a fellow photographer on the scene.

And, of course, our official time keeper; David.  He came and brightened up our day with his English accent (or was it Australian?)…  He is a pleasure to talk with, and get rides to the outer reaches of the track to take pictures.

Get ready for video of this event, I just have to get it all edited… Also, stay tuned for the Bonneville Roadster… a lot is about to start cooking with that!

“S’deuced Hits the Road”

Right after the Grand National Roadster Show, I think I may have mentioned that there were big plans for ’S’Deuced,’ and that would not be the last you would see of her.

Well, she just now made the move to take advantage of amazing invitation to sit in the NHRA Museum.

While the Busby ‘A’ Team was there, they picked up the Rambler Club Car Special to bring back for further repairs, after they discovered some ‘trailer rash’ right before the Grand National Roadster Show 2010.

Jim Busby Career Wednesday

We have chosen to focus again, on the 3 Window… We are just so excited.  Plus, it is going to be one of the most exciting parts of Jim’s Career.

This car is unbelieveble.  Chris Hukill’s paint job has brought so many detail to attention on the car.  The bare metal was almost distracting from the workmanship that is going on.

Plus, the Rambler Club Car Special is back in the shop!  We grabbed it from the NHRA museum when we put S’deuced in there… Remember when the A Team fixed the Rambler Car in the middle of the museum back at the Grand National Roadster show?

Also, Bruce Meyer’s Jaguar lightweight E Type is back from the Copperstate 1000, and the A Team is going to make it spruce for Bruce.
